The RFR Rail Seal System is designed for use with asphalt and poured-in-place
concrete. RFR inserts
fit all common RE rail sections, accommodate any type of rail
fastener, and works with or without rail anchors.

The existing crossing surface and rail to be removed and replaced
with new 136# RE rail, asphalt, and the RFR Rail Seal System rubber flangeway/headerboards.
|
RFR Rail Seal inserts are laid out next to rail in preparation for installation. These
RFR inserts were produced in 11 foot increments.
|
|
|
RFR Rail Seal inserts are connected together with an 8 inch steel
connecting pin. Connecting the inserts keeps the inserts in proper alignment and
prevents offsets at the joint. Soapy water or liquid detergent is the recommended
lubricant to use, NO PETROLEUM BASED LUBRICANTS SHOULD BE USED.

RFR Rail Seal gauge and field side inserts placed against the rail
prior to any spikes being driven and "heeled" against the rubber. The RFR Rail
Seal System field side inserts shown in this photo are for timber tie application.
For concrete tie applications, RFR has a field side insert specifically designed to accommodate the higher
rail clips used with concrete ties.
|
 |
RFR Rail Seal guage inserts may be held against the rail with a spike
set and "heeled" against its backside. The RFR Rail Seal inserts can be placed against
the rail and held in place with properly compacted asphalt, in lieu of using spikes.
Three (3) spikes per Rail Seal gauge insert were used in this project due to a
scheduling conflict between the paving contractor and the railroad track crew.
|
|
North half of crossing - field side inserts were fully spiked.
South half of crossing - field side inserts were half spiked. All gauge inserts were held in place against
rail with 3 spikes total per insert.
|
|
RFR Rail Seal inserts with asphalt being placed and compacted in multiple lifts. Care
should be taken to roll the asphalt parallel to the rail until the final lift and compaction. RFR
Industries recommends capping the ends of the rubber inserts at each end of the crossing with
an asphalt ramp.
